Today I found out that a close friend has cancer. Although common in the news now, it is uncommon when it hits so close to home. How can we process what this actually means? How can we remain close to God when tough times occur? Is it really possible to trust God through the storm?
Trust God through the storm
When bad news hits, we all react differently. Some of us cling to the hope that what we’ve been told is wrong, some of us start down the stages of grief path, while others turn to God. Specific situations and the circumstances you’re going through may cause you to follow any of the above avenues, but how can we really make it to that final one: clinging to God, trusting God’s plan?
1. Read God’s Words
The first thing I suggest when you are going through a tough time: read God’s words. Read your bible. There are so many promises God makes to us that we cannot ignore them. I’ve picked out a few that are really helping me through a storm right now…
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. - Proverb 3:5-6 Click To Tweet
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:5-7
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discourages, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9
2. Pray God’s Words
When we repeatedly read aloud the words God has given us in the Bible, our brain can begin to believe it. The more we hear and see these thoughts, the more likely we are to follow them, use them, and let them guide us in our daily lives.

I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what is it to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. – Philippians 4:11-13
Although you may not be in the mindset where you can be content in every situation, look around and find each little blessing God has given you today.
Today, I feel blessed that God has provided me with food and shelter, friends and family that I love, the fact that my two daughters tell me “I love you mommy” out of the blue. I am so grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of my students every day. I am thankful for the colder morning.

3. Believe God’s Words
To fully be able to trust God through the storm we must allow Him an everlasting place in our lives. We simply cannot get through life on our own.
God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any of us. For in him we live and move and have our being. – Acts 17:27-28
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16
